Less than two years after the release of Final Fantasy 10, fans of the series were given another Final Fantasy title for the PS2 by Square Enix. However, it wasn't exactly what they were expecting. The Final Fantasy series is rather notorious for having self contained game universes that, while sharing similar themes and recurring characters, are completely separate.

The idea of an entire game that was a direct sequel to Final Fantasy 10 was novel at the time. However, after the first screen shots of the game were released to the internet, many fans began to cry foul.

Final Fantasy 10-2 was released in November of 2003 and featured some rather notorious J-pop music pieces, an all female cast, and costumes that seemed to be designed solely for the titillation of the rather large male audience that Final Fantasy had garnered over the years. It was bold, it was unconventional, and it was a sign of the times, with the newly formed Square Enix changing many aspects of the series for this and future titles and setting a standard, with many sequels following Final Fantasy 10-2.
