Manz lives with his unpredictable mother in a small, dusty Texas town, on the border of Mexico. He thinks that leaving this town is the only way for his life to get better. He spends the summer working on a cattle ranch with his best friend Jed, where he meets Vanessa; a beautiful and smart girl who extends a hand of kindness to Manz. He is just unsure whether she can be trusted.
As Manz struggles to find any sense of stability, he wrestles with his Mexican-American identity, poverty, and the voices that grow louder every day. He sees illegal immigrants being rounded up by the Border Patrol and the voices tell him that he will be next. He believes that Operation Wetback—the brutal operation to deport over one million Mexican natives during the 1950s—is happening again.
The voices grow stronger until Manz doesn’t know who he can believe. Jessica Lee Anderson’s Border Crossing eloquently introduces the difficult realities of mental illness to young adult readers honestly and compassionately.
